Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe (2026): MoR, Managed Payments, and Fees

·16 min read

Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe for SaaS in 2026: merchant of record vs processor, Stripe Managed Payments fees, tax, payouts, migration, and when to pick each.

If you are comparing Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe for a SaaS product, you are really choosing between three models: Stripe as payment processor (you are the seller), Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record (Lemon Squeezy is the seller), or Stripe Managed Payments (Stripe becomes the seller through Link). All three can power subscriptions and global sales, but fees, tax liability, checkout surfaces, and migration paths differ sharply.

This guide is a developer-first deep dive with numbers taken from official pricing and docs last checked October 19, 2026. It complements our wider Stripe vs Lemon Squeezy vs Polar vs Creem comparison and the Polar vs Stripe write-up on Managed Payments fine print.

Short answer

Pick plain Stripe when you want the lowest per-transaction cost and full control over checkout, and you can register, collect, and file sales tax/VAT yourself (or you only sell in a few markets). Pick Lemon Squeezy when you want a merchant of record today with hosted checkout, license keys, and built-in email marketing, and you are fine with 5% + 50¢ plus surcharges on international, PayPal, and subscription payments. Pick Stripe Managed Payments when you are already on Stripe Checkout, your business is in a supported country, you sell eligible digital products, and you want Stripe (via Link) to handle global indirect tax on new sales for an extra 3.5% per transaction on top of standard processing. Lemon Squeezy has been owned by Stripe since July 26, 2024; the Lemon Squeezy team is building Managed Payments, and a migration path is the stated long-term direction.

What is a merchant of record (and why it matters)

A merchant of record (MoR) is the legal seller on the customer's receipt and card statement. The MoR calculates, collects, files, and remits indirect tax (US sales tax, VAT, GST), handles refunds and chargebacks as the liable party, and pays you out as a supplier after its fee.

Stripe Payments (the default integration most developers mean when they say "Stripe") is a payment processor. Money moves through Stripe, but you remain the seller. Stripe Tax can calculate and collect tax where you are registered; registration, filing, and audit liability stay with you unless you add separate filing products.

Lemon Squeezy and Stripe Managed Payments are MoR options for digital goods. Customers see the MoR on invoices; you trade higher fees and less checkout control for compliance offload.

That split is the core of stripe vs lemon squeezy search intent: not "which API is nicer," but who carries tax and dispute liability.

Lemon Squeezy calculates its platform fee on the tax-inclusive total. Stripe Managed Payments stacks on standard processing; Billing is not included in the 3.5% (FAQ).

Worked example: $20 and $100 per month (US card, before tax)

Assumptions: one subscription renewal, domestic US card, no PayPal, fees computed on the pre-tax plan price (MoR fees on real orders run slightly higher once VAT is added).

At $20: Stripe processing $0.88 + Billing $0.14 = $1.02; Managed Payments adds $0.70; Lemon Squeezy $1.10 + $0.50 = $1.60. At $100: Stripe $3.90; Managed Payments $7.40; Lemon Squeezy $6.00.

Add 1.5% international on Lemon Squeezy non-US payments and Stripe's own international surcharges where applicable (Stripe pricing).

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Stripe?

On raw percentages, plain Stripe is cheaper than Lemon Squeezy for a US subscription. Lemon Squeezy is not competing on the lowest rate; it bundles MoR tax handling, license keys, recovery tooling, and optional email marketing. Stripe Managed Payments costs more than Lemon Squeezy on these two price points because you still pay full Stripe processing plus 3.5% plus Billing. Compare MoR options on total cost including tax compliance labor, not processing alone.

Stripe as payment processor

Stripe is still the default for teams that want maximum flexibility: custom Elements checkout, Connect marketplaces, quotes, multiphase subscription schedules, and the broadest payment method catalog.

For SaaS you typically combine:

  • Payments for card and wallet capture
  • Stripe Billing for subscriptions, trials, proration, and the hosted Customer Portal
  • Stripe Tax when you are registered in jurisdictions where you must collect

Pick plain Stripe if: you are US-focused or only expose a few tax jurisdictions, you need Connect or heavily customized checkout, or your finance stack already handles VAT registrations.

Skip plain Stripe if: you are a solo founder selling globally on day one and do not want to own threshold monitoring and filings. That is the MoR tradeoff.

Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe's merchant of record

Stripe Managed Payments became generally available April 22, 2026 for businesses in supported countries (Stripe announced 39 countries at GA; see the current list on eligibility). When enabled on a Checkout Session or Payment Link, Stripe (through Link) becomes the seller for that transaction, handles indirect tax in 80+ countries, and takes on fraud, disputes, and transaction-level support.

What developers should verify before enabling it:

  • Eligibility: digital products with eligible product tax codes; no human-delivered services or physical goods
  • Surfaces: Checkout and Payment Links, not arbitrary Elements flows; no Connect (docs)
  • Existing subscribers: Managed Payments applies to new subscriptions created through Managed Payments Checkout; legacy subscribers stay on your current merchant setup (update guide)
  • Customer experience: receipts and descriptors show Link; hybrid "domestic direct, international MoR" is supported per session
  • Pricing: 3.5% on top of processing; Billing billed separately

For a longer Managed Payments vs Polar breakdown (support SLAs, tax gaps, migration), see Polar vs Stripe.

Pick Managed Payments if: you already run Stripe Checkout, you qualify geographically, and you want MoR without leaving Stripe's dashboard and webhooks.

Skip Managed Payments if: you need the lowest MoR fee (other merchant of record providers publish lower headline rates) or you rely on Connect or fully custom payment UI.

Lemon Squeezy: merchant of record on Stripe rails

Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record built for digital products: SaaS, downloads, courses, and memberships. It has processed on Stripe since launch and became a Stripe company in July 2024.

What you get out of the box:

  • Hosted and embedded checkout, subscriptions with trials and plan changes
  • License key management and secure file delivery
  • Discounts, bundles, abandoned cart and failed payment recovery (some recovery flows add extra marketing fees)
  • Optional email marketing (free up to 500 subscribers on the pricing page)
  • API and webhooks for checkout, subscriptions, and orders

Payouts run twice per month to bank (via Stripe) or PayPal, with US bank payouts free and 1% on non-US bank payouts as of the last-checked date above.

Stripe acquisition and roadmap

The acquisition was not a shutdown. Lemon Squeezy continues to operate, but the product direction is tied to Stripe's MoR strategy. In a January 28, 2026 update, co-founder JR Farr said the team has been building Stripe Managed Payments, acknowledged slower Lemon Squeezy support and fewer feature releases during that work, and stated the goal of an easy migration path from Lemon Squeezy to Managed Payments.

For greenfield projects in late 2026, that means: Lemon Squeezy is a valid MoR today, but Stripe Managed Payments is the Stripe-native MoR bet long term. If you are already on Lemon Squeezy and it works, staying put is reasonable until a migration tool ships.

Pick Lemon Squeezy if: you want MoR now with license keys and minimal backend code, you already use it, or you prefer its hosted store and email tooling over Link-branded Managed Payments checkout.

Skip Lemon Squeezy if: you only need processing and own tax, or you want the lowest MoR fee and can evaluate Polar, Creem, or Dodo instead.

  });

Payouts and where you can sell

Stripe Payments requires your business to be in a Stripe-supported country. Payout timing follows your account's schedule.

Stripe Managed Payments adds a stricter business-location list (US, Canada, most of Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and others on the eligibility page). Stripe runs an account review before enabling Managed Payments.

Lemon Squeezy sells to customers in 130+ currencies and pays founders in 200+ countries via bank or PayPal, subject to payout fees above. That can matter when Stripe Payments is invite-only in your country but you still need an MoR.

When to pick each (decision rules)

  1. You need Connect or a marketplace. Plain Stripe. Neither Lemon Squeezy nor Managed Payments replaces Connect.
  2. You sell services with humans in the loop or physical goods. Plain Stripe. MoR products here target automated digital delivery.
  3. You want the lowest fees and will own tax. Plain Stripe + Billing (+ Tax where registered).
  4. You are on Stripe Checkout and want MoR for new global sales without switching vendors. Stripe Managed Payments, if you pass eligibility.
  5. You want MoR today with license keys and a creator-friendly dashboard. Lemon Squeezy, especially if you are already live on it.
  6. You are choosing an MoR only on price. Compare headline MoR rates in our four-way guide or Dodo Payments review before defaulting to Lemon Squeezy.

Migration tradeoffs

Lemon Squeezy to Stripe (processor): you become the seller again. Plan for tax registrations, Stripe Billing price IDs, new checkout URLs, and webhook handler changes. Existing Lemon Squeezy subscriptions do not auto-port; you typically run dual billing until subscribers move or churn.

Lemon Squeezy to Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe has stated an easy migration is a goal (2026 update); treat tooling as announced, not guaranteed until Stripe documents it. Expect new Checkout sessions, Link-branded receipts, and MoR only on new Managed Payments checkouts.

Stripe to Lemon Squeezy: export products and customers, recreate variants, and ask subscribers to re-subscribe unless you use a provider-specific migration service. Budget for higher fees in exchange for MoR coverage.

Stripe to Managed Payments: same Stripe account; enable per Checkout Session. Existing subscribers stay on direct processing until they buy through a Managed Payments session.

Keep a provider abstraction in your app so these moves are config and webhook routing, not a rewrite. That is how we ship TurboStarter.

Other merchant of record providers (short list)

This post stays on the Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe lane. For Paddle, Polar, Creem, and Dodo, use the dedicated write-ups instead of repeating them here:

Paddle vs Lemon Squeezy: both are MoRs near 5% + 50¢ with buyer support bundled on Paddle's side; compare checkout flexibility and migration support if you are down to those two.

How TurboStarter fits

TurboStarter Core is a production-ready SaaS starter kit across web, mobile, extension, and AI from one backend. Billing is not locked to a single vendor: @workspace/billing and @workspace/billing-web expose one API over Stripe (default), Lemon Squeezy, Polar, and Dodo Payments (billing overview). Switching providers is primarily changing exports in packages/billing/web/src/providers and environment variables, as documented for Stripe and Lemon Squeezy.

We sell TurboStarter licenses through Lemon Squeezy on our pricing page. That is a real-world MoR choice for digital goods, not a claim that Lemon Squeezy is always the right pick for your product.

Managed Payments is not a first-class toggle in the kit today. The Stripe provider uses Checkout and fulfills on checkout.session.completed, which is the right surface to add managed_payments when you need it.

FAQ

Verdict

Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe in 2026 is not a rivalry between two startups. Stripe owns Lemon Squeezy and ships Managed Payments as its in-dashboard MoR. Choose plain Stripe for control and lowest processing cost, Lemon Squeezy for a mature MoR with license keys and creator features today, and Managed Payments when you want MoR on Stripe Checkout without leaving Stripe's APIs. Whichever you pick, wire it behind a shared billing layer so the next migration is a configuration change, not a rewrite. Compare pricing for the kits and the billing docs when you ship.
